Located in the territory of the village of Ripe, you must first of all arrive at the Grotto of Sant'Angelo from which you have to descend on a path that is all in all easy and reach the deep valley where the Salinello River flows.

Proceeding north you arrive in one of the most beautiful and impervious landscapes of this Apennine area, characterized by gorges, gorges and steep walls that furrow a deep valley, almost a canyon, that the water has dug over the centuries on the slopes between the Monte Foltrone (1720 m) and Monte Girella (1814 m).

The two mountains form the so-called Twin Mountains and the entire district is part of the "Gole del Salinello" Nature Reserve which encompasses the territories of the Municipalities of Civitella del Tronto and Valle Castellana for an area of about 800 hectares. Over time, different places of worship have been carved on the ridges of the two mountains, among which the most important and famous is certainly the Grotta di Sant'Angelo where the remains of the walls of the Hermitage of San Michele Arcangelo are still perfectly visible.

Other hermitages that you meet along the banks of the river are the Hermitage of Santa Maria Scalena and opposite, but on the opposite wall of the mountain, the Hermitage of San Marco and again for the medieval Hermitage of San Francesco alle Scalelle that even hosted St. Francis of Assisi.

Moreover, along the road that leads from Macchia da Sole to San Vito, along a small detour and crossing the Fosso delle Cannavine you can admire the ruins of the small convent of San Benedetto alle Cannavine. Finally, staying on the same side, you can get to the Grotto of Santa Maria Maddalena.
