Castellalto is a municipality formed by numerous hamlets, some now larger than the capital itself, starting from the modern and populous hamlet of Castelnuovo Vomano located downstream.
The capital is located in the hills at 450 m s.l.m. in a highly panoramic position from where you can admire the Gran Sasso chain, the Vomano and Tordino valley and the Adriatic Sea.
.
The territory of Castellalto seems to have been inhabited already in pre-Roman times, probably by the Italic people of the Pretuzi.
Testimonies of the Roman era can be found in the countryside surrounding the village and date back to the period from the 2nd century BC. in V d.C. Written documents mention Castrum Vetus (today's Castellalto and Castelbasso) as early as the 10th century. At the end of the fifteenth century both Castellalto and Castelbasso became a fief of the Dukes of Acquaviva di Atri.
Although not having its own typical dish, Castellalto fits fully into the Teramo culinary tradition. A very popular dish is without a doubt "granitt", which originates from the simple and simple country cooking.
An indicative recipe is the following (for 6 people): half a kilo of flour, tomato sauce (or tomato sauce) at will, cheese (pecorino or parmesan). Preparation: knead the flour, bring to a boil a pot of water and then drop the finely crumbled dough into your hands.
Cook for about ten minutes and then season, sprinkling with grated cheese in good quantity. Very beautiful the Romanesque Church of Saints Peter and Andrew built in 1338 and renovated in the seventeenth century.
